Speeding puts everyone at risk. As a shared community, we all play a role in keeping KAUST roads safe by driving responsibly and holding one another accountable.
Digital speed signs across campus display and record vehicle speeds. HSE analyzes this data to monitor road safety. Recent data for two months shows:
Speed data collected by digital speed signs at three KAUST locations | |||
Location | King Abdullah Boulevard (Pedestrian crossing) | Rihan Lane (Near TKS Elementary) | Bayt Al Hikmah Blvd (Heading to the Island) |
% Speeding | 61% | 30% | 19% |
% >10km/h over speed limit | 52% | 2% | 4% |
Speed Limit | 40 km/h | 30km/h | 40km/h |
Max Speed Recorded | 122 km/h | 72 km/h | 101 km/h |
These speeds are unacceptable. Maximum speeds recorded that are, for example, 122 km/h in a 40 km/h zone in areas with pedestrian activity, children, and cyclists are extremely dangerous and have no place on KAUST roads. They represent not just a breach of policy, but a disregard for human life.
Watch this short video on the dangers of speeding—even small increases can have serious consequences.
Always drive below the posted speed when:
Reminder: Speed limits are maximums, not targets. A slower speed protects lives. Let’s slow down and look out for one another.
